Age Structure

Mixed-age teams. Every student contributes.

Teams of 4–5 are always mixed age. Older students lead hardware and complex programming. Younger students bring natural drone aptitude and often outperform older teammates in RC racing. Every age group has a domain where they can shine.

Ages 7–9Programmer / Driver
BAND

VEX V5: Blocks programming and controller operation. Hardware handled by an older teammate.

Drone Soccer: Natural aptitude — full participation from Session 3.

E1 RC: Full participation from Session 2.

Accommodation
  • Pre-built chassis. Drivetrain assembled before Session 1. Student focuses on wiring, programming, and driving.
Ages 10–13Builder / Programmer
BAND

VEX V5: Full Clawbot build with guidance. Blocks → Switch Blocks. Begins Python in Month 2.

Drone Soccer: Full participation. Often becomes the strongest pilot tier by Session 8.

E1 RC: Full participation. Developing race strategy by Week 3.

Accommodation
  • No accommodation. TA support during fine-motor build steps (shaft collars, small fasteners).
Ages 14–18Team Captain
BAND

VEX V5: Full build plus mechanism modifications. Python primary from Month 2. Engineering Notebook lead.

Drone Soccer: Tactical leader and primary pilot designation in Month 2+.

E1 RC: Develops racing lines and drafting technique from Week 2.

Accommodation
  • Expected to support younger teammates. V5RC team recruitment begins from this group.
Pre-Built Chassis ProtocolAny student aged 7–9 receives a pre-assembled 4-motor Clawbot drivetrain at the start of Session 1. They join the team at the claw mechanism, sensor mounting, and cable management — meaningful hardware tasks that don't require fine motor precision. They are never singled out: the pre-build is simply described as "your robot arrived ready for its upper systems." By Session 2, the whole team is at the same build stage.

Approach

How the program actually runs.

Every student. Every domain.

Mixed-age teams of 4–5 compete on all three platforms — VEX V5, Drone Soccer, and E1 RC. Older students lead hardware, younger students often dominate as drone pilots and RC racers. Every age has a domain where it shines.

No lectures. All making.

Every 3-hour session follows the same anatomy: 10-min setup → instruction or activity → 10-min debrief and robot storage. Inspired by Montessori principles, the room is built around doing: building, debugging, iterating, competing.

Two competition tracks.

Each VEX team picks one primary challenge (Waypoint, Haul, or Signal). Clash is mandatory for everyone. Two simultaneous tournaments mean more students finish the month having won something — which is exactly what makes them come back for Month 2.
